1452 Tampa Girl Cigar Box Purse

These Tampa Girl cigar box purses are so popular here in Tampa that it’s hard to keep them in stock. So many people have family roots in the cigar industry here that it’s a sentimental thing. These are not original Tampa Girl cigar boxes. I take a wooden cigar box and decoupage the vintage labels onto it. The originals are very hard to find in good condition. This one is a Gonzalez, Fisher y Ca.. I do have another on my site that is a vintage Antonio label. They were both made here in Tampa. They both depict a young Cuban girl on the docks of Havana. Morro Castle is in the background. This is actually a Perdomo, Connecticut, Habano, Gordo cigar box made of dark brown wood with dovetail detailing in the corners and a slide opening. The brown seal has been left as is. Four large crystals frame the Tampa Girl image. I gave the cigar box purse a porcelain knob closure for security and painted the back black. Gold purse feet have been added to the back and bottom for protection.  Gold hardware has been attached to the sides so that you may add a strap that you already own. This makes these little cigar box purses of mine versatile in that they can be worn by the handle, over the shoulder or cross- body. I sell straps and gold and silver cross body chains too. The chain in the last photo is available, but not included.  The interior has  been lined in padded velvet leopard fabric and red trim.  The handle is made up of black, gold, red and silver beads and a black tassel. 5.75 x 7 4.5″ – nice and deep! THIS IS AN AUTHENTIC CIGAR BOX PURSE, SO SMALL FLAWS INFLICTED BY THE SMOKERS OF THE CIGARS ARE TO BE EXPECTED! No two are exactly alike.  Large flaws will be noted in the description. If you don’t like what you see, I can do custom cigar box purses and can include anything you like!- pictures of family members, pets, places- you name it! I always ship insured. History: The story of the Tampa Girl cigars goes back to the 1920’s. At that time the Tampa cigar industry was in a transition between hand made and machine made cigars. Mr. Antonio Fisher came to Tampa from Philadelphia, looking for a cigar to be presented to the northern market. As a major cigar distributor his company was in need of something special in design and blend. The idea was presented to Mr. Benny Quintana Gonzalez, a puertorican cigar manufacturer that at the time he was also interested in creating a new line of cigars for his new factory in West Tampa. Both Gonzalez and Fisher worked together creating a partnership, and a few months later the idea was presented to the George Schlegel, Lithography, Co. who created the design that we all know today. At the end of the first year (10 month) the company was producing over half a million cigars. By 1925 the production was 240,000 a month or 2.4 millions a year. The company in charge of the production was Gonzalez Habano Co., a partnership with Mr. A. Fisher, that lasted until 1933, when the line of cigars changed from hand made to machine production in order to accommodate the market demand during the depression years. At the time a new label design was created. Decades later the production and the labels were discontinued becoming a legend in the Tampa Cigar industry.
